Hello!
My name is Matan Shamai and I am a ceramic artist.
I have always felt that I live life at a different pace.
I did a service year, finished my army service at the age of 23, traveled throughout Israel and around the world, went on the Israel Trail, and completed a degree in ceramic design at Bezalel Academy for Arts and Design Jerusalem at the age of 30.
During my ceramic design studies at Bezalel, I realized how much the pace of the ceramic material suits me. The patience, time, and the feeling that the material requires matched my pace.
With a lot of perseverance, faith, and creativity, I developed my artistic language, my way of working and touching ceramic material.
In some of my works, I talk about process, perseverance, and insistence; how the material and the results are part of the journey, and that the experience and knowledge I have accumulated are the success for me.
When I come to the studio to work with ceramic material, I feel like I'm coming to a playground, without fear of the outcome. Something about this approach allows me to stretch the boundaries of shape and size, not to be afraid of mistakes, and to get excited like a child trying new things.
In my work I use ceramics, recycled materials, bags, plastic tools, knitting, wheel throwing, sand work, and molds. I invite you to read more here on my site. Here I share my feelings and thoughts on my past projects.
